Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, & The Sacred Valley

Our journey starts in Lima, as we explore the historic Plaza de Armas and the artistic Barranco district. We then fly to Cusco and the Sacred Valley, the center of the ancient Inca Empire. During our 6 days in this area we’ll visit many Inca ruins, including Ollantaytambo, Pumamarca, and Moray. We’ll also have the opportunity to experience Andean community life as we learn about ancient weaving techniques, enjoy lunches with the locals, and learn about an Andean reforesting program.

For many, the highlight of Peru is Machu Picchu. We’ll visit these famous ruins twice: once on a day hike up the Inca Trail where we’ll enter the ruins from the Sun Gate and again the following day. This time we drive up to Machu Picchu for a privately guided tour and plenty of time to wander around on your own. From Machu Picchu we’ll continue to Cusco, the Imperial City of the Incas. Our private guide will show us the local markets, ancient temples, and the incredible Inca stonework.

Or, if you want to extend the trip but aren't interested in the trek you can spend a few days along the Tambopata River deep in Peru's Amazon region. Access to this completely different region of Peru is easy as it's only a 30 minute flight from the highlands of Cusco to the lush rainforest surrounding Puerto Maldonado. Spend your days searching for wildlife along the rivers and oxbow lakes, climb the 140 foot observation tower for amazing views of the rainforest canopy, or visit a clay lick to see dozens of colorful birds including macaws and parrots.

Explore Peru is a privately guided, small group departure (10 people max).

Optional Extension #1:  High Andes Trekking

Dan Hopkins, owner of GrassTrack Safaris, will be hosting this trek.  We hope you decide to join us as this promises to be a unique experience of the high Andes mountains & culture.

Following our exploration of the Sacred Valley, you'll have the option to extend your trip with a breathtaking 5-day trek near Ausangate Mountain (20,945 ft) in the Cordillera Vilcanota. This privately guided trek is fully supported with llamas carrying our gear as we hike from lodge to lodge. Accommodation will be in unique, rustic “tambos” or Andean Lodges, owned by the local community. Daily meals will be prepared by experienced chefs who will introduce you to a great variety of delicious Peruvian dishes, and for your entertainment: authentic vernacular music, played by local inhabitants, will liven up some of your evenings at the "tambos." This trek is non-technical and you only need to carry your day pack. Each day is about 5-7 hours of hiking at high altitude (the highest pass is nearly 17,000 feet).

Optional Extension #2: The Tambopata River & Amazon Lowlands

If you want to extend the trip but aren't interested in the trek you can spend a few days along the Tambopata River deep in Peru's Amazon region.

This optional extension to your Sacred Valley trip will take you from the high mountains of Cusco to the lush tropical forests of along the Tambopata River in Peru’s Amazon basin. You’ll spend 3 days in the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the true remaining jewels of the Amazon rainforest. The Reserve protects over 1,000 square miles of preserved land in southeastern Peru, including lowland Amazon rainforest, riverine forest, and oxbow lakes. This reserve and surrounding region are one of the most biodiverse places on the planet and is host to over 1,000 species of butterflies, 170 species of mammals, around 600 species of birds, and hundreds of species of trees and plants.

The Pasoda Amazonas Lodge sits on the banks of the Tambopata River and offers an immersive experience of the rainforest. Here you can paddle the local river and oxbow lakes at sunrise searching for a family of giant river otters, climb the 140-foot observation tower for a bird’s eye view of the forest canopy, take a night walk to look for nocturnal animals, or visit a clay lick to watch macaws and parrots feed on the nutritious soil.

We can add additional days if you want to spend more time in this fascinating region.
