Visit Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and a 5 Day Trek in the Andes

Our journey starts in Lima, as we explore the historic Plaza de Armas and the artistic Barranco district.  We then fly to Cusco and the Sacred Valley, the center of the ancient Inca Empire.  During our 6 days in this area, we’ll visit many Inca ruins, including Ollantaytambo, Pumamarca, and Moray.  We’ll also have the opportunity to experience Andean community life as we learn about the old weaving techniques, enjoy lunches with the locals, and learn about an Andean reforesting program.

For many, the highlight of Peru is Machu Picchu.  We’ll visit these famous ruins twice: once on a day hike up the Inca Trail where we’ll enter the ruins from the Sun Gate and again the following day.  This time we drive up to Machu Picchu for a privately guided tour and plenty of time to wander around on your own.  From Machu Picchu we’ll continue to Cusco, the Imperial City of the Incas.  Our private guide will show us the local markets, ancient temples, and the incredible Inca stonework.

Our trip ends with a breathtaking 5-day trek near Ausangate Mountain (20,000 ft) in the Cordillera Vilcanota.  Our private, guided trek is fully supported with llamas carrying our gear as we hike from lodge to lodge.  Accommodation will be in unique, rustic “Tambos” or Andean Lodges, owned by the local community.  Daily meals will be prepared by experienced chefs who will introduce you to a great variety of delicious Peruvian dishes, and for your entertainment: authentic vernacular music, played by local inhabitants, will liven up some of your evenings at the "tambos."  The trek is non-technical and you only need to carry your day pack.  Each day is about 5 hours of hiking at high altitude (the highest pass is nearly 17,000 feet).

This is a privately guided, small group departure (12 people max).
