Hiking Cotopaxi Volcano

A 10 Day Hiking & Summit Attempt of Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi is perhaps the most impressive volcano in South America and one of Ecuador's most striking natural icons. Its nearly perfect snowcapped cone rises to 19,347 feet above the surrounding plains making it Ecuador’s second highest mountain and the third highest active volcano in the world. The ancient cultures of Ecuador once worshiped the mountain as a place where the gods dwelt. In the Quechua language, Cotopaxi translates to “neck of the moon”.

This is the most popular climb in Ecuador not only because of the amazing views of the crater and nearby volcanos from Cotopaxi’s summit, but the climb can be attempted by hikers with no mountaineering experience. All that’s needed are crampons, ice axes, and a positive attitude. We’ll be in the company of an experienced, professional, local guide for the summit climb.

That said, this is a serious undertaking as you’ll experience high altitude, freezing temperatures, and strong winds. During our 10-day trip, we’ll spend lots of time hiking smaller peaks in the region to acclimate and prepare ourselves for the summit attempt. Following our training hikes, on Day 9 we’ll make a push for the summit with a midnight departure from the refugio hostel on the upper slopes of Cotopaxi.

This isn't a camping trip and each night will be spent in comfortable lodges with great food (and hot showers!).  If you’re looking for your next big challenge and to push your limits, this unique trip could be for you!
