Tanzania Trails

A 7 Day Wildlife Adventure

Tanzania Trails

The perfect introduction to Tanzania!  On this 7 day safari, you'll explore the highlights of Tanzania's northern parks, each with strikingly diverse landscapes and wildlife. Your journey begins with Tarangire National Park, famous for a landscape dotted with baobab trees and large herds of elephants.  Continue on to the Serengeti, arguably the most famous wildlife park in the world, where you'll feel lost in the vast open plains filled with millions of wildebeest, zebra, and other wildlife.  Then it's on to the equally famous Ngorongoro Crater, an enormous caldera set in the stunning volcanic highlands.  You're journey ends with a game drive in Lake Manyara Park along the Great Rift Escarpment where thousands of flamingos breed in the caustic lake and lions are known to climb trees!

This safari has scheduled departures departing every Saturday from Arusha and guaranteed with a minimum of 2 people.  You'll stay in small, independently owned lodges, permanent camps, and classic luxury tented camps.

ITINERARY

Day 1 | Arrive in Arusha | Mount Meru Game Lodge | Bed & Breakfast

After clearing with customs and Immigration formalities at the airport, you will be met by your driver guide for the short transfer to your Lodge, nestled between the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure or visit the Game Sanctuary that has for many years provided a safe haven to African plains game.

Mount Meru Game Lodge - Set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings, the Mount Meru Game Lodge is nestled between the Usa river and the wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to zebra, ostrich, a wide array of birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. Conveniently located 25 minutes from Kilimanjaro

International Airport (KIA), the lodge is an ideal base for your travels. The lodge & sanctuary was established by Dr. Von Nagy in 1959 and remains in family hands till today. The lodge has grown in popularity over the years, and our visitors have included numerous presidents as well as members of European Royal families.

Day 2 | Tarangire National Park | Kirurumu Manyara Lodge | Full Board

This morning, wake to the views of Mt Meru before heading down to breakfast. After collecting your packed lunch, you will join your driver guide as you head to Tarangire National Park for a full day game drive.  As the afternoon begins to end, you will make your way out of the park and towards your camp, located on the Great Rift Valley Escarpment.

Tarangire National Park extends over 1,615 square miles in the Rift Valley. Arid and studded with giant termite mounds, it is here that you can witness massive herds of elephant with some reaching as many as 500. During the dry season the park becomes a haven for many migratory species and this is the best time to see animals as they cluster around various water sources. When the rains arrive the animals become more widely distributed once more and the region’s swamps are alive with bird life. The many herds of elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, gazelle and eland feast on the green shoots, eventually depleting them and being forced to return to the river systems once more.

The Kirurumu Manyara Lodge is located at the edge of the Rift Valley and offers breath taking views over the Masai veld and Lake Manyara. Through its elevated location, the Lodge offers a fantastic panoramic view over the plains of the African escarpment. The 27 safari tents have their own en-suite bathroom with a flushing toilet, a wash basin and shower. Warm water and power are available day and night.

Directly behind the lodge starts the fertile highland of Ngorongoro and the whole lodge complex is surrounded by lush green vegetation. There is a fully equipped bar on a wooden sundeck – a perfect place to enjoy a sun downer after a full day of safari adventures. Freshly prepared meals are served in a partly-open dining area with a makuti (thatched grass) roof. Friendly and attentive service will make your stay a pleasant and comfortable safari experience.

Day 3-4 | Serengeti National Park | Kati Kati Tented Camp | Full Board

tanzania safari

After breakfast and check out, depart to the Serengeti with a packed lunch. On arrival into the park, game drive towards your camp. The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park. Its name means 'endless plain' in the Masai language. It is from here that massive concentrations of wildebeest, zebras and other animals commence the annual Great Migration in search of pastures new, providing one of the greatest natural spectacles to be found anywhere in the world. You can watch golden-maned lions stalking the migrating herds, spot leopards at rest in trees at dusk and take a hot-air balloon tour at dawn as the sun’s golden rays illuminate the land. As the afternoon begins to end, you will make your way towards your camp. On arrival you will be assisted with check in and shown your tent.

On Day 4 enjoy a full day, with morning and evening games drives in Serengeti National Park. Enjoy quiet evenings by the camp fire and the exclusivity of absolute comfort combined with the authenticity of a night spent in the African bush, an extraordinary experience for all nature lovers.

Kati Kati is a traditional mobile tented camp with just 10 tents, it is strategically located in the Central Serengeti to cover the vast Serengeti Plains. The camp offers comfortable accommodation and a unique opportunity to enjoy a real safari camp experience. The camp is only a two-hour scenic drive from Olduvai Gorge Museum and Grumeti River. A cozy mess tent is located in the center of the camp where meals are served. The campfire is ready every evening for appetizers and snacks before dinner.

Day 5 | Ngorongoro Conservation Area | Acacia Farm Lodge | Full Board

After breakfast and check out  - depart with a packed lunch and drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. On the way you will one of the world's most important prehistoric sites, Olduvai Gorge, for a tour and lecture. Learn how the gorge was vital in establishing the African origin of humankind and in turn, why it is referred to as the 'Cradle of Mankind'. Proceed on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and on clearing the paperwork you will drive through the Crater Rim from where you will have the opportunity – weather permitting – to see the Crater, in all its glory. Drive onto your Lodge, located in lush grounds within the Karatu Area. On arrival you will be assisted with check in and shown your room.

Acacia Farm Lodge is a country Lodge nestled in an active mixed farm located high on the spectacular Great Rift's escarpment area with commanding panoramic views of the amazing Karatu farmlands and the nearby Ngorongoro forest area. The Lodge is strategically located between Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks on one side and the Serengeti - Ngorongoro ecosystem on the other side. Each of the 28 luxurious chalets has a comfortable lounge and en suite bedroom all with a mini bar, coffee making facility, air-conditioning, satellite television, WIFI and other modern and appropriate amenities plus a private balcony with sweeping views of the farm. A swimming pool, well-appointed and creatively designed public areas ensure a wonderful stay for every guest.

Day 6 | Ngorongoro Conservation Area | Acacia Farm Lodge | Full Board

Get up early to make the most out of your day in the Ngorongoro Crater. Ngorongoro Crater is a deep, volcanic crater, the largest un flooded and unbroken caldera in the world, measuring about 12 miles across, 2000 feet deep and 115 sq miles in area. The high walls of the crater itself, serve as a natural enclosure for an abundance of wildlife. There is a large resident population of varied ground game with the very real chance of you being able to see the "big five'.  Among the notable birds are Lammergeyer, Vereaux's Eagle and Egyptian Vulture, which make their home in the highest of the crater wall, the beautiful Rosy-breasted Longclaw, which appears on the plains after rains and flocks of lesser and Greater Flamingos which are spasmodic visitors to the crater lakes.  Return to your lodge before dusk, and in time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 7 | Lake Manyara National Park & Return to Arusha

After breakfast and check out and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Lake Manyara National Park is small compared to Tanzania’s other parks. At only 130 sq miles it fits neatly into the Great Rift Valley and is the real Cinderella of Tanzanian parks. This park is often overlooked and underrated but this gem was described by Ernest Hemingway as ‘the loveliest place I have ever seen’. The shallow alkaline lake is often covered by resident flamingos and whatever the park lacks in size it makes up for in diversity. Apart from the lake and the many lions that roam the park, there is an expanse of tropical jungle filled with troops of baboons and other occupants of the rainforest. Large herds of buffalos and zebras wander on the plains and in the distance are the ever-present jagged peaks of volcanoes.

At a time, convenient to you, you will depart from the park and make your way to Arusha for lunch. After lunch, and depending on your international flight details, you will be transferred either to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight home (additional supplement of $120per vehicle for the transfer to JRO) or to Arusha domestic airport (no charge) for your flight to Zanzibar or elsewhere in Tanzania.
