The Culture & Wildlife of Tanzania

A 12-day Exploration of Tanzania's Diverse Cultures & Wildlife

On this private 12-day journey across northern Tanzania, you'll experience diverse cultures and stunning wildlife in spectacular settings.  Your accommodation will be in small luxury lodges and tented camps, located in Tanzania's remote wilderness areas.

Your adventure begins in the baobab studded plains of Tarangire National Park where you'll search for elephants in the forests and grasslands.  Continue on to the remote alkaline Lake Eyasi where you'll spend a day engaged with the local Hadzabe and Datoga people.  The Hadzabe have occupied this area for thousands of years and speak a unique "click" language (similar to the San Bushmen of southern Africa).  Join them on a morning hunt or bush walk then visit a Datoga homestead to see how these pastoral people live and watch their blacksmith skills as they create jewelry and arrow tips.

You'll visit the Ngorongoro Crater, an enormous caldera filled with wildlife before flying to the northern region of the Serengeti National Park.  Arguably the world's most famous park, the Serengeti is famous for vast, open plains and the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras.  Spend your days searching the park for lions, elephants, cheetah, hundreds of different birds.

Finally, your journey ends with a flight back to Arusha where you'll visit the Shanga, a collection of artist workshop that supports disabled Tanzanians.  Watch the artists create beadwork and jewelry before your transfer to the airport for your departing flight.

ITINERARY

Day 1 | Arrive in Arusha | Manyara Ranch Tented Camp

manyara ranchmanyara ranchArrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, after clearing customs and Immigration formalities you will be met by your driver guide and immediately set off for the unique landscapes of a Conservancy located in northern Tanzania. Manyara Ranch Conservancy is a 35,000 acres of exclusive wilderness situated within the wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Manyara National Parks in Tanzania. The Conservancy provides guided game walks; night game drives in 4x4 open safari vehicles. Other activities include Game viewing from hides overlooking waterholes, bush breakfasts, bush lunches and sundowners, cultural visits to partner villages and the local school. The ranch is home to a significant wildlife population, including elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, oryx, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and many more.  Overnight at Manyara Ranch Tented Camp (Full Board)

Day 2 | Tarangire National Park | Manyara Ranch Tented Camp

On day two of your adventure, we recommend an early breakfast so as to make the most of your day. You will spend the better part of the day exploring the baobab studded plains  of Tarangire National Park  - located about 12 miles from your Camp. Tarangire National Park extends over some 1,615 square miles in the Rift Valley. Arid and studded with giant termite mounds, it is here that you can witness massive herds of elephant with some reaching as many as 500. During the dry season the park becomes a haven for many migratory species and this is the best time to see animals as they cluster around various water sources. When the rains arrive the animals become more widely distributed once more and the region’s swamps are alive with bird life. The many herds of elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, gazelle and eland feast on the green shoots, eventually depleting them and being forced to return to the river systems once more.  At a time convenient to you, you will depart from the park and make your way back to Camp in time for a shower and a drink before dinner.  Overnight at Manyara Ranch Tented Camp (Full Board)

Day 3 | Lake Eyasi | Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp

lake eyasi tanzaniakisima ngedaToday you will check out of your camp and head towards the shores of Lake Eyasi, a seasonal soda lake. Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow salt lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau south of the Serengeti National Park and southwest of Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania. From the camp, one can enjoy the spectacular landscape as well as experience the daily life of the last few remaining hunter/gatherers the Hadza as well as their pastoralist nomadic counterparts the Barbaig.

Along the way, you will stop off for a visit to a local school to enjoy some time with the ever enthusiastic pupils and teachers before driving to Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp.  Overnight Kisima Ngeda (Full Board)

Day 4  | Hadzabe & Datoga Cultural Experience | Plantation Lodge

Today you will check out of your lodge and depart with a packed lunch for a chance to visit the two interesting and remote group of people who inhabit the area - the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. The Hadzabe are survivors of the Stone age and the last hunter-gatherers of Tanzania while the Datoga were, three hundred years ago, the first Nilo-Hamatic speaking people to enter the Ngorongoro area. This unique cultural program will give you a chance to learn all about how these tribes live in harmony with the land as well as go hunting and berry picking with them.

At a time convenient to you, make your way towards the Plantation Lodge which is conveniently located just a stone’s throw from the entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. On arrival at your lodge, you will be escorted to the reception for check in. After a short safari briefing, you will be shown your room to refresh and relax as you wait for dinner.  Overnight at Plantation Lodge (Full Board)

Day 5 | Ngorongoro Crater | Plantation Lodge

Today you will be taken on a crater tour complete with picnic lunch. If you’re lucky you will spot many of the animals on your ‘must see’ list. Ngorongoro Crater is a deep, volcanic crater, the largest un flooded and unbroken caldera in the world, measuring about 12 miles across, 1900 feet deep and 115 sq miles in area. Ngorongoro Conservation Area was accorded the status of a World Heritage Site. The high walls of the crater itself, serve as a natural enclosure for an abundance of wildlife. There is a large resident population of varied ground game with the very real chance of you being able to see the "big five'.  Among the notable birds are Lammergeyer, Vereaux's Eagle and Egyptian Vulture, which make their home in the highest of the crater wall, the beautiful Rosy-breasted Long claw, which appears on the plains after rains and flocks of lesser and Greater Flamingos which are spasmodic visitors to the crater lakes.

Back at Plantation Lodge, dinner will be cooking away and after a much deserved hot shower, sit down for a meal in the beautiful dining area.  Overnight at Plantation Lodge (Full Board)

Day 6 | Serengeti National Park | Serian Serengeti Camp North
